Every Pixar Movie Releasing After Onward

Onward is Pixar's latest movie to release, but there's plenty more to come from the Disney studio. Onward, directed by Dan Scanlon, marks the studio's 22nd feature film since Pixar was founded in 1986. The studio has set the bar high for animation over the last few decades, garnering an astounding 10 Best Animated Feature awards at the Oscars. Pixar will look to add to those accolades in the busy years to come.

Pixar opened the world's eyes to a new kind of animation with the release of Toy Story in 1995. Since then, the now-Disney-owned subsidiary has churned out hit after hit with popular titles like Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, and many others. Several of Pixar's movies were given sequels that grew just as big as the originals, but they still have a focus on original ideas in a world of imagination.

Before Onward, Pixar put the effort into expanding previously established franchises. Four of their past five films dating back to 2017 have been sequels, with Finding Dory, Cars 3, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4. Onward, starring Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, will be the first in a series of brand-new Pixar movies - not sequels. Here's all the upcoming Pixar movies releasing after Onward.

Soul - June 19, 2020

For the first time since 2017, Pixar will release two movies within one calendar year. Three months after OnwardSoul will release in theaters. It's a fantasy comedy about a middle school music teacher named Joe Gardner. Pete Docter is directing Soul, his first since 2015's Inside Out. The filmmaker also co-wrote the script alongside Tina Fey, Mike Jones, and Kemp Powers. Soul's first teaser trailer was released in November and revealed Pixar's first African-American protagonist.

Outside of his teaching career, Joe dreams of being a jazz musician, but after being given the chance, he suffers an untimely accident which causes his soul to separate from his body. He must then find a way to return his soul back to Earth. The character of Joe will be voiced by Jamie Foxx with a voice cast that also includes Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, and Daveed Diggs.

Four Untitled Pixar Films (2021-2023)

Pixar Movies

Looking ahead, Disney has announced four release dates - between 2021 and 2023 - for four upcoming Pixar movies:

  • June 18, 2021
  • March 11, 2022
  • June 17, 2022
  • June 16, 2023

As of now, there aren't many details about Pixar's upcoming movies. It has, however, been announced that Brian Fee (Cars 3), Mark Andrews (Brave), Domee Shi (Bao), and Kristen Lester are working on those films. It has also been revealed that Pixar isn't working on any sequels, so the upcoming films will all be original. Details will certainly emerge in the coming months and years, but it's important to remember that Pixar enjoys keeping their projects under wraps. Either way, the future of Pixar remains bright in the years ahead following the release of Onward.
