The Suicide Squad Video May Confirm Idris Elba & John Cena's DC Characters

The DC characters Idris Elba and John Cena play in The Suicide Squad might have been confirmed in a recent video. Warner Bros. and DC launched their villain team-up franchise in 2016, with Suicide Squad receiving a mostly negative reaction despite making nearly $750 million worldwide. Instead of making a true sequel, James Gunn joined the DC Extended Universe and will bring a mostly new ensemble together for his The Suicide Squad.

Gunn's approach for the 2021 blockbuster will involve returning characters, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag as members of Task Force X, but Elba, Cena, David Dastmalchian, Michael Rooker, and more will play new characters. So far, Gunn and the studios have been hesitant to reveal too much information about the characters that are involved, with set photos offering the best look at who each cast member could be. Thanks to a video celebrating Gunn's birthday, a few more roles may be confirmed.

In the video shared by the official The Suicide Squad Twitter account, cast members for the film wished Gunn a happy birthday. Robbie did so by using her Harley Quinn voice at first, while Dastmalchian seemingly confirmed the reports he's Polka-Dot Man by sticking colorful dots on his face. But, the video might have also revealed that Elba is Bronze Tiger and Cena is Peacemaker. Elba's video message was played in slow motion to give his voice a growling effect, which could tease he's Bronze Tiger. Meanwhile, Cena is playing an arcade shooting game while double-fisting guns, which ties to Peacemaker's frequent use of guns and affinity for violence to maintain peace.

If Elba is Bronze Tiger and Cena is Peacemaker, this video will serve as the first piece of confirmation that both are playing the roles fans have long speculated they would fit. The original report of Elba joining The Suicide Squad had him replacing Will Smith as Deadshot, but the decision was then made for him to play a new character instead. Many immediately turned to Bronze Tiger as a good role for Elba. Cena was linked to the role of Peacemaker at the time of his casting, but he previously refused to confirm this was the case.

The possible reveal of who Elba and Cena are playing in The Suicide Squad is just a piece of the news that fans have been treated to recently, and more could come soon. A brand new logo for The Suicide Squad was revealed as part of this video too, and Gunn has teased that some big announcements will be made during DC's virtual convention, DC FanDome. After the teases provided by Elba and Cena, perhaps an official confirmation on the entire cast's roles will arrive then, possibly along with a first look image.
