STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER—What the Final Trailer Revealed

A shot of the Millennium Falcon ship going into hyperspace, with bright, blue lines all around

The highly anticipated Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is a monumental movie for Star Wars fans everywhere. Not only because it will bring back Luke Skywalker (or at least his ghost), Leia, and Lando Calrissian, but because this will wrap up the current trilogy and will be the last Star Wars movie that we can expect to see for at least a couple of years.

With the release of the latest trailer at D23 Expo 2019, fans were pleasantly surprised by the very revealing footage but were left with a great deal of questions. Where is R2? What’s up with C3PO’s red eyes? Is Rey giving in to the Dark Side? We do our best to dive into the footage and give a little bit of context to the overwhelming trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, coming to Regal December 20th!

1. The A Team

In the latest trailer, we find the core team of the movie landed on the desert planet of Pasaana, where a good deal of the movie appears to take place. In this shot, we find Rey, Poe and Finn taking the front, with C3PO and Chewie standing behind. The only main character that has been mysteriously missing in both trailers is R2D2, so we are unsure where his role will lie in the upcoming movie.

2. Carrie Fisher Makes an Appearance

It is still surprising to find the late Carrie Fisher appearing in the new Star Wars releases, as we find her giving a heartfelt goodbye to Rey on a jungle planet in both trailers. Likely recycling old footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Lucasfilm has CGI’d parts of Fisher to make her appear older (grey hair and some added wrinkles) to reprise her role as General Leia Organa.

3. The Resistance

In the triumphant rise of the trailer, we find a Resistance fleet in battle formation dropping out of hyperspace. This shot is exciting as it reveals a gathering of a wide range of vehicles, including the famous X-Wing, Corellian Corvettes, B-Wings and Y-Wings, giving chills to all major Star Wars geeks everywhere.

4. Palpatine’s Fleet

Star Wars-First Order ships

Speaking of fleets, this chilling shot reveals what would appear to be the dreaded (and long awaited) fleet of Star Destroyers that Palpatine has been supposedly building in secret. Though it isn’t made certain who is behind these sinister forces, it is apparent that these Star Destroyers have been modified with laser cannons instead of the usual docking bays.

5. A New Superweapon?

In a quick shot of the trailer, we see a giant, red laser blast devastating an unknown planet. It is safe to assume that this is the result of the newly mounted laser cannons on the aforementioned Star Destroyers by Palpatine. The other possibility is that this is the reveal of the Death Star-like superweapons that the First Order have been rumored to be building.

6. C3PO Has Red Eyes

One of the more confusing (and not at all addressed) moments in the trailer was the cut showing C3P0 with red eyes. Although we are uncertain if this is due to some upgrade he receives in the movie or if he has been turned over to the Dark Side, we do know that it is a rather menacing look for the beloved android.

7. Rey is Getting Stronger

Rey (Daisy Ridley) in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

What is most prominent in The Rise of Skywalker trailer is that Rey has been training quite extensively for the last year. In this scene showing Rey on the jungle planet where we found Leia earlier in the trailer, she demonstrates an impressive lightsaber throw, making it apparent that she has greatly increased her skill with a saber. We also notice that Rey is adorned in a red sash that has not been seen in previous movies; this marker indicates a mastery of all forms of lightsaber combat, meaning she will be a much greater threat to Kylo Ren.

8. Rey and Kylo Ren Standoff

One of the more climactic moments in the trailer is the lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo Ren atop the wreckage of the second Death Star. We can surmise that this will be one of the key (and probably last) fights in the movie, showing that even in the end Kylo will continue to carry out his grandfather’s mission and Rey will be fighting relentlessly to stop him.

9. Does Rey Fall to the Dark Side?

Another shocker from the trailer reveals an evil Rey, cloaked in a Sith-like hood and weilding a double-sided, red lightsaber. There is speculation that this could very well be a vision or a dream sequence experienced by Rey in the movie, or could it possibly be that Rey has become vulnerable to the Dark Side? Either way, the scene is chilling and, well…pretty cool.

10. The Iconic Breathing

Star Wars-Vader's helmet

As in the end of the first The Rise of Skywalker trailer we hear the maniacal cackling of Palpatine, at the end of the second we can make out a brief moment where we hear the iconic breathing of Lord Vader. This Easter egg may hint that Darth Vader may have an appearance in the final movie, though it is hard to foresee what this might entail. But with Kylo Ren hellbent on carrying out Vader’s plans, there may be some big surprises in store.
