Spring Screams

When you think about spooky season, spring doesn’t usually come to mind. However, this spring is stacked with brand new horror films. From hilarious to haunting, there is something for every horror junkie to enjoy in the coming months!

Renfield

Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield in this rated R horror comedy. Dracula (played by Nicolas Cage) has employed Renfield as his henchman for many years, but Renfield wants nothing more than to be freed from answering to Dracula’s every whim. Long ago, Dracula gave Renfield the power of superhero-esque strength and agility, so Renfield is indebted to Dracula. He tends to Dracula’s needs and handles his “feedings” by retrieving innocent humans for him. While it’s filled with gory battles, the cast brings lots of laughs as well. Awkwafina plays the role of a police officer named Rebecca who befriends Renfield and helps him as he tries to free himself from Dracula’s grasp. Renfield premieres in theatres on April 14th!

The Pope's Exorcist

This religious horror film is loosely based on the real-life files of Father Gabriele Amorth, a priest  who was once the Chief Exorcist of the Vatican. Russell Crowe stars as Father Amorth. Amorth is questioned by a panel about his last exorcism in which a young possessed woman leapt from a building. He denies any wrongdoing as he says that was not an exorcism. He refers the panel to his boss, the Pope.

Then, when a young child is possessed, Amorth recognizes the demon in possession and digs deeper to find why this demon has not yet been defeated. Along the way, he unearths a conspiracy that goes deeper than he had ever imagined possible and reveals secrets from the Vatican. As he explores catacombs in search of the truth, he encounters demons that fight to possess his soul as well. Is his faith strong enough to protect him? See it in theatres on April 14th!

Nefarious

Sean Patrick Flanery stars as a serial killer on death row named Edward. In what some view as a hail Mary attempt to stay his execution, Edward requests a psychological evaluation on the day he is scheduled to be put to death. As his psychologist Dr. James Martin (played by Jordan Belfi) conducts the evaluation, Edward insists that he is not really Edward. He claims to be possessed by multiple demons.

The trailer shows this evaluation which starts off as mundane and quickly escalates to bone-chilling. “We own him,” Edward says eerily, his hands chained to the table in front of him. As Dr. Martin becomes more convinced that Edward truly is possessed, he tries to convince the demons to let Edward speak. Meanwhile, the jail cell doors are opening seemingly unprompted elsewhere in the prison. Suddenly, Edward breaks the bones in his hands and escapes his handcuffs, reaching out and choking Dr. Martin. The demons, speaking through Edward, tell Dr. Martin that he will soon commit three murders himself. Dr. Martin must try to stop the demons’ prophecy from coming true.

This terrifying thriller comes to theatres on April 14th!

Evil Dead Rise

This latest installment of the Evil Dead franchise is almost here! While this installation does not feature the iconic character Ash Williams, the film is executive produced by the actor who portrays Ash, Bruce Campbell, as well as the director of the original Evil Dead trilogy, Sam Raimi.

When estranged sisters reunite for a visit, it’s not long before their peaceful reunion is interrupted. Beth (played by Lily Sullivan) arrives at her sister Ellie’s (played by Alyssa Sutherland) apartment building expecting to spend time with her nephew and nieces while reconnecting with Ellie.

However, not long after her arrival an earthquake causes a sinkhole to open up beneath the building. As they check out the damage, they find a mysterious book (fans of the franchise will recognize The Necronomicon right away) in the hole that has appeared. This discovery unleashes a demon which possesses Ellie, causing her to torture her own children. Beth and the children must fight off the demon all while being trapped with her inside their small apartment. This film is jam-packed with blood and gore, but there is still some of that signature wit seen in the rest of the Evil Dead films. Evil Dead Rise comes to theatres on April 21st!

Beau is Afraid

In Ari Aster’s latest feature film, Joaquin Phoenix stars as Beau, an anxiety-riddled man who is embarking on a treacherous journey to get home to his mother. The film follows Beau’s entire lifetime in an epic story that spans over a three hour runtime.

This darkly comedic story follows a very fearful Beau as he faces his fears to travel to his mother. Typically in a film where the protagonist faces their fears, they come to realize that they had nothing to fear at all. Well, that is not so in this film. Beau seems to encounter the worst case scenario at every turn. At one point, he wakes up with a bloodied face and an ankle monitor on and soon finds out he’s been abducted by a couple (Nathan Lane & Amy Ryan).

Ari Aster’s past films Hereditary and Midsommar were riveting horror films with grotesque horror, deeply dark plots, and occasionally surreal imagery. Beau is Afraid is surreal from beginning to end, utilizing a fantastic pastel color palette and incorporating elements of animation for some scenes. Aster’s films don’t follow the typical story formula but they are always engaging and leave the audience thinking about what they’ve seen for days to come.

The Boogeyman

This PG-13 horror film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s short story by the same name. In the trailer, we see a father (Chris Messina) tucking his young daughter (Vivian Lyra Blair) into bed at night, surrounded by night lights. He asks her what she’s afraid of and she points to the closet. Her father makes a show of walking to the closet to show her that there are no monsters hiding in there and then closes the closet door behind him.

After she has fallen asleep, she’s awakened by the closet door being flung open. It seems as though a creature is moving through her room in the darkness. Peeking under her bed to check, she rolls her nightlight under the bed and we get a brief glimpse of the creature.

Believing this boogeyman is simply the product of an active imagination, her father and sister (Sophie Thatcher) initially dismiss the little girl’s fears. However they slowly begin to realize that there is some sort of evil being lurking in the darkness and they must stop it before it causes them harm. See this thrilling film in theatres starting June 2nd!

The Blackening

The Blackening takes a comedic jab at slasher movie stereotypes, including a well-known trope that in many horror films featuring an ensemble cast, a black character is always the first to be killed off. Acknowledging this well-known plot point, the film’s tagline is “They can’t all die first.”

During Juneteenth weekend, a group of seven black friends go on a getaway to a secluded cabin. While the group relaxes together and plays a game of cards, the power goes out. King (played by Melvin Gregg) leaves to search for the fuse box, and the others join in. They discover a room they had not yet noticed that is crudely labeled “Game Room.” Inside the room they find a board game called The Blackening. They lift the lid to unveil a game board with an offensive racial caricature in the center and several small game pieces. One of the friends remarks that it looks like “Jim Crow Monopoly.” At first the group has no desire to play, but when a threatening video shows a feed of their friend in danger, they realize they must play along to save her from a sadistic masked killer.

One by one, the killer eliminates members of the friend group by shooting them with arrows. The group must finish the game and try to stay alive until the end to defeat the killer and remove the mask. This film features performances from Antoinette Robinson of “Dear White People,” Jay Pharoah of “Saturday Night Live,” and more. The Blackening comes to the big screen on June 16th!

We are so excited about this stacked horror line-up! There is a movie for every horror fan this spring, whether you enjoy movies about demon possession, movies based on Stephen King works, or even if you like to laugh in between screams. Catch all these films at a Regal near you!
