Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 actor Karen Gillan reveals hopes for her character Nebula. Gillan debuted as Nebula, the adopted daughter of Thanos, in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. She went on to appear in that film's sequel, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Both Nebula and her adopted sister, Gamora, play a key role in the Infinity Saga, as they often affect Thanos' actions. Gamora and Nebula have an antagonistic relationship for much of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, thanks to the cruel way Thanos pits them against each other. However, by the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the two have formed an uneasy bond.
Gillan is confirmed to return as Nebula for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which doesn't yet have a release date. Key aspects of the film remain unknown. However, part of it will likely focus on Nebula rebuilding her relationship with Gamora. This is because the present-day version of the character was murdered by Thanos, leaving behind only past Gamora, who hasn't joined the Guardians yet. Unfortunately, one popular fan theory, that Mantis could use her powers to restore past Gamora's memories, has been debunked by director James Gunn. Regardless, there will be an interesting role reversal at play for Gamora and Nebula, as Nebula became an official member of the Guardians team at the end of Avengers: Endgame, while Gamora's whereabouts remain unknown.
Now, Gillan has revealed one part of Nebula's story in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 she's eager to explore. While speaking on a virtual panel for GalaxyCon Live (via Fandom Spotlite), Gillan discussed Nebula's journey thus far, highlighting the abuse she suffered from Thanos: "She's someone who's dealt with abuse from her father from such a young age...In Avengers, she had to face the source of her abuse and then actually watch him get eliminated from her life." Then, Gillan shared she's eager to see "future Nebula in the sense of what she's going to be like now that that source of abuse has gone out of her life, how's she going to build herself back up...I'm interested to maybe try and take her to a place now where she starts to rebuild her life."
Gillan makes a great point about how much Nebula's life will have changed in the wake of Thanos' death. Since she survived his snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, she's technically already had five years without him, though Marvel fans didn't see very much of that time onscreen. Plus, though present-day Thanos was decapitated by Thor at the start of Avengers: Endgame, Nebula faced 2014 Thanos again, activating old wounds. Since she'll be dealing with that, plus the past version of Gamora, it makes sense Nebula will need to rebuild her life in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
It will be interesting to see exactly what role Nebula plays in the movie, with so much of the story unknown at this point. It's possible the events of Thor: Love and Thunder will lend some clarity, as some Guardians members may appear in that film. However, if that doesn't come to fruition, fans can watch Nebula's journey continue in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
