D23 Expo 2019—Marvel Studios Highlights

Some very big Marvel news came out of D23 Expo 2019 today during a behind the scenes look at The Walt Disney Studios’ upcoming movies. Marvel already made headlines at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, where they unveiled Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and now fans are getting more information on a highly anticipated sequel as well as a new cast announcement.

First, Ryan Coogler took the stage to announce he will be writing and directing Black Panther 2, set to be released May 6, 2022. Coogler reunites with Marvel after directing and co-writing the cultural phenomenon, Black Panther (2018), which became the first superhero movie to receive a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Motion Picture—Drama and an Academy Award® nomination for Best Picture. The movie also grossed $1.347 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing solo superhero movie of all-time and Marvel’s third highest-grossing movie.

The cast of Marvel’s Eternals (2020) took the stage next, announcing a new cast member—Kit Harrington. The Game of Thrones (2011-2019) star will play Dane Whitman in the movie about a race of immortal beings. He joins a star-studded cast that includes Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Dong-seok Ma (Gilgamesh), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Barry Keoghan (Druig), Gemma Chan (Sersi), Lia McHugh (Sprite), and Lauren Ridloff (Makkari). Eternals comes to Regal November 6, 2020.

Scarlett Johansson called in to the presentation from the set of her upcoming movie, Black Widow (2020). The prequel will follow Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) between the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Fans in Hall D23 were also treated to exclusive footage from the movie, which is Marvel’s next in line, coming to Regal May 1, 2020.
