Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the ninth episode in the Star Wars saga, is coming to Regal December 20. The final chapter in the Skywalker story will bring to an end over forty years of storytelling that began with George Lucas’ visionary 1977 movie Star Wars. The cast of the upcoming blockbuster took the stage today at D23 Expo 2019’s marquee presentation to unveil a new poster.
J.J. Abrams returns to direct Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker four years after rebooting the franchise with 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Abrams was joined by Chris Terrio and co-writers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly in writing the screenplay, which resurrects one of the best movie villains of all-time, Emperor Palpatine. We already heard The Emperor’s maniacal laugh in the teaser trailer, revealed in April, and now his face looms over Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in the new poster.
Ian McDiarmid returns to play the iconic villain, Palpatine, a performance we last saw in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005). He will be joined by original trilogy members Billy Dee Wiliams (Lando Calrissian), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), and the late Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), who will appear in archival footage.
