D23 Expo 2019—Disney Movie News We Are Most Anticipating

Fans at a D23 Expo

All the magical worlds of Disney will join together under one roof this weekend when D23: The Official Disney Fan Club presents D23 Expo 2019. Disney, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm will join Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios for a marquee presentation in Hall D23 this Saturday to share exclusive looks at some of their biggest movies coming soon to a theatre near you. Past D23 Expos have revealed buzz-worthy news and never-before-seen footage from blockbusters such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), Doctor Strange (2016), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). We took to Twitter and asked our fans what movie news they are most anticipating from this year’s D23 Expo.

MCU Phase 4

It's no surprise that Marvel Studios tops the charts given their ground-breaking reveals at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, during which they unveiled Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Regal fans are still excited to hear more from the studio that brought them the highest-grossing movie of all-time, Avengers: Endgame (2018).

The plot details of Marvel’s next movie, Black Widow (2020), remain under wraps, with the only information being that the prequel will take place between Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). D23 Expo 2019 may provide our first look at Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian), and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) in one of the most highly anticipated movies of next year.

Marvel also made a splash at Comic-Con with the announcement that the classic comic book character Blade / Eric Brooks will be introduced into the MCU with two-time Academy Award®-winner Mahershala Ali portraying the titular character. It’s yet to be seen exactly when the vampire hunter will make his debut, but Marvel currently has three open slots on their movie slate in February, May, and July 2022.

Star Wars

On the heels of the final chapter of the Skywalker saga, Star Wars was a close second on our fan poll. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will bring to an end over forty years of storytelling that began with Star Wars in 1977 and has since captivated the imaginations and wonder of fans worldwide, creating some of the biggest box office hits to date.

Star Wars Celebration Chicago provided us with our first look at Episode IX this past April, creating a lot of buzz in the process and generating even more unanswered questions. The trailer opens with Rey on a desert planet reminiscent of where her story began on Jakku in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), although the exact location here is unspecified. Who else is with Rey on this planet? Is this the new base of the Resistance?

The trailer referenced all three of the original Star Wars characters. We see Solo’s blaster on Rey’s hip, Princess Leia makes an appearance, and Luke’s voice reminds us that “no one’s ever really gone.” Fans are clamoring to learn more about the role each will play in the ninth installment. Speaking of characters from the original trilogy, we were all excited to see the return of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, especially at the helm of his former ship, the Millennium Falcon.

While these bigger, spoiler-revealing questions will undoubtedly remain a mystery until much later, we’re hoping for some new footage, additional characters, or more plot details to come out of Saturday’s panel.

We have two upcoming Pixar movies to look forward to heading into D23. Onward (2020) has made headlines with its star-studded cast, which includes Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

The trailer, released in May, introduces a suburban fantasy world that is sure to entertain, and with Pixar veteran Dan Scanlon at the helm, Onward is in good hands. We know less about Pixar’s June 2020 feature, Soul, a movie that may have some big reveals in store for audiences at D23.

Disney Princesses

Huge news has already been revealed on the Disney Princess front. We learned in July that Halle Bailey will play Princess Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of the animated classic, The Little Mermaid (1989).

We’ve already seen two trailers from Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and Frozen II (2019), but much about Mulan (2020) remains a mystery. In addition to further details on these Princess titles, fans would love to learn which of their favorite Disney classics will receive the live-action treatment next as the studio has many available slots on their calendar in the coming two years.
