Captain Marvel featured a young Monica Rambeau (Akira Akbar), but Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could set her up as a new Avenger in Captain Marvel 2. Given the next chapter of the MCU - as the first after the Infinity Saga's end - will have to kick-off an exciting new Marvel movie era, the idea of more Avengers heroes makes sense. That those heroes would be more diverse too is an even more important deal.
Rambeau was the daughter of Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Carol Danvers' fellow Air Force pilot and best friend. Young Monica was close with Danvers as well, referring to her as Aunt Carol. The little girl was devastated by Danvers' apparent death but always held onto hope that her Aunt Carol was alive. The two of them were reunited after Danvers returned to Earth, where Monica helped restore her memories and picked the colors for Captain Marvel's suit, but were ultimately separated once again when Captain Marvel left to find a home for the Skrulls. So far, Monica is an ordinary child in the MCU, but she is a superhero in the comics. After being exposed to extra-dimensional energy, she gained the powers of energy manipulation, with the ability to convert her body into any form of energy. She soon joined the Avengers and has even led the team in the past. Although she first used the moniker Captain Marvel, even before Carol Danvers had the title in the comics, she has also gone by Photon, Pulsar, and is currently known as Spectrum.
Teyonnah Paris has been cast as an adult Rambeau for Phase 4, and is set to make her debut on the Disney+ series WandaVision in 2021. With the reality-altering possibilities of what is shaping up to be the MCU's weirdest entry yet, the seeds of Monica's powers may be planted in the series, leading up to her becoming a full-fledged superhero, and perhaps an Avenger, in Captain Marvel 2.
Most of WandaVision's plot is still under wraps, but trailers show that it will bend time genre, and - with Vision's return after being killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War - even the universe itself. Scarlet Witch has proved herself to be one of the most powerful characters in the MCU, and it is possible that Vision's resurrection was her doing, intentionally or otherwise. If Wanda is capable of bringing someone back from the dead, it is not that far of a stretch for her to give someone superpowers. Getting entangled with Scarlet Witch, especially with Vision having the Mind Stone, could lead to Rambeau getting her superpowers.
Since Avengers: Endgame saw Captain Marvel return to Earth for the first time in years, she may stick around on the planet in Captain Marvel 2 to catch up on what she's missed. She could catch up with the friends she left behind, like Monica Rambeau. If she found that the girl was not only all grown up, but had budding superpowers, Danvers could mentor her to be a proper hero, capable of joining the Avengers.
With a superpowered Rambeau, Captain Marvel 2 could introduce another potential cast member for an all-female Avengers film, first teased in Avengers: Endgame. Monica's powerful energy manipulation would make her a welcome addition to an already-exciting potential future opportunity. After over ten years of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, the team-up would be a refreshing entry into the canon.
