Avatar 2: New Jake & Neytiri Story Details Revealed

Production Still Avatar 2

Avatar 2 producer Jon Landau sheds new light on where the sequel will find Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). A good portion of 2009's Avatar focused on the growing relationship between human Jake and Na'vi Neytiri, and the film ended with Jake permanently becoming one of the Na'vi by transferring his consciousness into his avatar. In 2021, over ten years since the first installment, audiences will finally learn about what happened to Jake and Neytiri after Jake's transformation. One thing is already certain: They have children now. Plus, fans will get to see how this couple continues to grow over four additional sequels, as director James Cameron has some big plans for the characters and the world of Pandora.

First things first, though: Cameron and his team have to complete production. Back in March, the Avatar sequels halted production due to the growing coronavirus pandemic, which suspended countless other film and television shoots. The delay caused some to wonder if Avatar 2 could be pushed from its December 2021 release date yet again, but Cameron remained optimistic that it would make it. Then, last week, news broke that Avatar 2 will resume production in New Zealand, making it one of the first major films to do so.

With Avatar 2 getting back to work, Landau spoke to RNZ about the film and divulged a few new details about where the story will find its two main characters. Specific plot details have still been kept tightly under wraps, so there's still much to uncover about what's to come. "This is the story of the Sully family and what one does to keep their family together," Landau began. He then went on to say this:

Jake and Neytiri have a family in this movie, they are forced to leave their home, they go out and explore the different regions of Pandora, including spending quite a bit of time on the water, around the water, in the water. I think, why do people turn to entertainment today, more so than ever? I think it’s to escape, to escape the world we’re in, to escape the other pressures they have in their lives… I think with Avatar, we have an opportunity to allow people to escape to an incredible world with incredible characters that they will follow, in much the same way as Peter Jackson was able to do with Lord of the Rings, so that’s what we’re looking forward to doing.

Production Still: Avatar

The comparison to Lord of the Rings is somewhat amusing considering Avatar 2 is in production in the same country where Amazon has been shooting their Lord of the Rings television show. Beyond that, it's easy to see some similarities between the two franchises, in that both are epic sagas set in vast, fantastical worlds. Avatar 2 will reportedly dive deeper into the world of Pandora, perhaps even literally when it comes to the oceans. According to Cameron, the technology required to shoot the underwater sequences is one of the biggest reasons why things have taken so long with the Avatar sequels.

Avatar 2 has a few hurdles to overcome when it arrives in theaters, one of which is the long gap between movies. There's a concern among some that audiences might not be as invested in an Avatar sequel as they would have been years ago. However, it sounds like Avatar 2 is trying to put special focus on their characters, especially in the cases of Jake and Neytiri. If the film can get audiences invested in the couple, then they'll be quick to come back for the many sequels. Should everything go to plan, fans can meet Jake and Neytiri's family in just over a year and a half.
