Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Reportedly Introduces Knuckles

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduces core video game character Knuckles the Echidna, according to a report. In 1991, the Sega Genesis introduced the first game built around the character of Sonic, a blue hedgehog with blazing speed racing maniacally through a series of levels while collecting gold rings. A supercharged platformer, the game became a huge smash and launched a series that would become one of the biggest in gaming history.

With Sonic thus established as one of the most popular of all video game characters, adaptations into other media quickly followed, including various animated shows and several comic book series (one of which ran for an impressive 290 issues). It wasn’t until 2020 that a feature film adaptation of Sonic finally reached screens, with a computer-animated Sonic pitted against Jim Carrey as the game series’ main antagonist Dr. Robotnik. Though the movie was successful with $308 million grossed at the worldwide box office, it’s perhaps best known for the pre-release controversy around the appearance of Sonic, who was deemed creepy looking after fans first glimpsed him in the trailer. Perhaps wisely, the decision was made to tweak Sonic’s look before the movie came out.

Several months after the less terrifying Sonic arrived in theaters to reasonable success, it was revealed that Paramount was going ahead with a sequel involving the first movie’s main creative team. Since then little has been announced about plans for that sequel, but it’s now being reported by website The Illuminerdi that those plans indeed include the introduction of video game character Knuckles the Echidna, an initial adversary of Sonic’s who becomes his ally. Reportedly, Knuckles will have more than a cameo in the movie, but will indeed play a large role. The same website also reports that production on the second Sonic movie is set to begin in May.

First introduced in 1994’s game Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles has become a main character in on-going Sonic lore, serving as the guardian of the pivotal Master Emerald, a gemstone that controls the series’ other Chaos Emeralds. Interestingly, the Chaos Emeralds did not show up in the first Sonic movie, but if Knuckles is arriving in the sequel then perhaps those magical gems will be included in the movie as well. It’s also worth noting that in the video games Knuckles is initially duped by Dr. Robotnik into opposing Sonic before becoming his friend, so Knuckles’ inclusion in the sequel seems like a hint that Carrey’s character will be back as well. Thus far, Carrey’s continued participation in the franchise has not been confirmed.

It remains to be seen how Knuckles will be woven into the Sonic sequel, but with Sonic’s fellow sidekick Tails already being introduced in the first movie’s post-credits scene, it seems like the full main Sonic team is indeed being assembled for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It will be interesting to see what actor is tapped to voice Knuckles, and even more interesting to see the character’s design. Hopefully, this time around there will be no controversy about the look of any Sonic characters.
