Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor Will Have Different Powers Than Chris Hemsworth’s

Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor.

Mighty Thor's power set will be different from that of Chris Hemsworth's Thor in the MCU. After years of absence, Natalie Portman is set to reprise her character as Jane Foster via Taika Waititi's Thor: Love & Thunder. This time, however, she'll have a meatier role than just the God of Thunder's love interest as she's also set to assume her own superhero identity.

Debuting in 2011's Thor, Portman reprised her role just one more time in Thor: The Dark World. Since then she's not been spotted in the MCU, although she made a voice cameo in Avengers: Endgame, but the footage used was an extra clip from the Alan Taylor-directed Marvel film. Not long after her appearance in the culminating movie, Thor: Love & Thunder was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 alongside the surprise that she'll not only reprise her role in the upcoming blockbuster, she's also going to wield the Mjölnir herself as she becomes Mighty Thor. Nothing more has been revealed since then with coronavirus disrupting Marvel Studios' original Phase 4 plans. Now, however, with filming set to begin in January, Portman is sharing new details about what to expect from her superhero identity in the much-anticipated movie.

Appearing in The Kelly Clarkson Show, the actress briefly talked about what Thor: Love & Thunder, and while she can't say anything more specific about the story or her role in it, she reveals that Jane's powers will not simply be the same ones that Hemsworth's Thor has had in years. Portman also clarified that her superhero persona isn't called Lady Thor, but The Mighty Thor instead.

“So, she does have powers. It’s not exactly the same as Thor. It’s her own version of it. And, she’s called The Mighty Thor.”

Over the years, Thor has showcased varying superhero abilities, but it's also worth noting that before to even be worthy of lifting the Mjölnir, he's already significantly stronger than the average human being because he's an Asgardian.  If anything, the hammer only amplifies his powers. As Odin (Anthony Hopkins) mockingly tells him in Thor: Ragnarok, he's not the God of Hammers, meaning his strength comes from within. Now, things are a bit different with Jane since she's a mere mortal. It's also worth noting that Portman previously teased Jane's cancer storyline from the comics in the film wherein becoming Mighty Thor exacerbated her condition as the hammer purged her body of the radiation from the treatment. In any case, it makes sense for Marvel Studios not wanting to give Jane the exact power set that Thor has since it limits their choices when it comes to how to present her as Mighty Thor without wanting to retread the abilities that her predecessor has showcased before.

For now, fans would just have to wait to learn more about Thor: Love & Thunder. Marvel Studios has remained mum on the project since it was announced in 2019 and understandably so considering that it won't hit theaters until 2022. Aside from what's been confirmed at SDCC, nothing else has been announced, including additional cast members rumored to include Christian Bale. Perhaps there will be additional details revealed once filming has officially begun.
