A big fan of superheroes? Love a good villain? Well we have some good news coming to fans of all things super because 2020 is gearing up to be another great year for the genre. While 2019 may seem like a hard year to top, we have Marvel Studios, DC Films, and Sony Pictures releasing an array of sequels, remakes, spin-offs and a handful of completely new ideas that are sure to make this the biggest year yet! While Birds of Prey started the year off strong with everyone's favorite antihero, Harley Quinn, we can look forward to the next big release of Bloodshot, starring Vin Diesel, coming to Regal on March 13th.
So let’s dust off our capes and suit up for another exciting year as we take a look at the 10 most anticipated superheroes and villains coming to Regal in 2020!
1. Hero - Bloodshot
Jimmy Dalton (Sam Heughan) and Ray Garrison / Bloodshot (Vin Diesel) in Bloodshot (2020)
While Vin Diesel is already essentially a superhero in the Fast & Furious franchise, he’ll be playing the real deal in the new release of Bloodshot, an adaptation of the popular Valiant Comics hero of the same name. Diesel will be playing the role of Ray Garrison, a U.S. Marine who was assassinated but was brought back to life by a team of scientists who upgraded him to become an indestructible super-soldier through the use of nanotechnology. With a vengeful bloodlust and powerful regenerative abilities, Bloodshot is setting up to be a sort of amped-up John Wick/Wolverine hybrid.
2. Villain - Axe
Axe (Toby Kebbell) in Bloodshot (2020)
While Diesel will be taking on the lead hero in Bloodshot, Toby Kebbell has been cast opposite as the antagonist, Axe. Marvel fans may likely remember Kebbell from his portrayal of Doctor Doom from 2015’s Fantastic Four. Though not much is yet known about Axe’s role in Bloodshot, Valiant Comics fans may have some idea of what to expect from this tech-wielding baddie.
3. Hero - Black Widow
Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in Black Widow (2020)
Nearly 10 years after her first appearance in Iron Man 2 (2010), Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is finally getting her own standalone movie! With Black Widow set to explore the origins of Natasha Romanoff, fans are eager to get a first-hand look into the Red Room and her involvement in Budapest. After meeting her demise in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Johansson hopes that this movie will bring some “closure” to fans.
4. Villain - Taskmaster
Taskmaster in Black Widow (2020)
There is already a shroud of mystery surrounding Black Widow, especially when it comes to the identity of the masked supervillain, Taskmaster. With the ability to mimic the movements of anyone he observes, Taskmaster will certainly be a daunting threat to Natasha—and really anyone who gets in his way, for that matter. While we likely won’t find out who hides behind the mask until the movie’s release, there has been a lot of fan theories as to whom it may be.
5. Hero - Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman 1984
Diana Prince / Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
We’re getting a huge dose of nostalgia as Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman is taking a big leap forward into the 1980’s—1984 to be exact. Though the backdrop is set on an era of neon lights and parachute pants, Wonder Woman will still be focusing on warfare, swapping out her fight in World War I for the Cold War. Based on the movie’s title and the fact that Steve Trevor has been resurrected, we can speculate that the Amazon Princess may be tapping into some sort of time travel.
6. Villain - Cheetah
Wonder Woman 1984
Barbara Minerva / Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Although the main villain of Wonder Woman 1984 is set to be Maxwell Lord, it has been revealed that Kristin Wiig will be taking on one of Wonder Woman's oldest and greatest enemies, Barbara Minerva, also known as Cheetah. Many DC fans may know that Cheetah and Wonder Woman were at a time allies, and the trailer seems to pay homage to that in their disarming conversation at the start of the trailer—though it is likely that Barbara has more nefarious intentions.
7. Villain - Max Lord
Wonder Woman 1984
Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Pedro Pascal plays the main villain in Wonder Woman 1984 as wealthy TV entrepreneur, Maxwell Lord. Giving off some serious “greed is good” vibes, Lord’s face is plastered all over town via glowing television sets as he spreads his gospel of an utopian future. From what we can gather from the trailer, it appears as though he just might have successfully armed himself with a deadly element known as the Chaos Shard, which will grant a wish to whomever possesses it.
8. (Anti)Hero - Morbius
Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) in Morbius (2020)
After his performance as the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Jared Leto is taking a step off of the DC comic book pages and moving into the MCU as the titular character in Morbius. Morbius is a human-vampire hybrid, and he is the next entry into the Spider-Man Villain Universe which will shift the focus away from the character as a traditional villain and frame him as more of a tragic anti-hero.
9. (Anti)Hero - Venom
Eddie Brock / Venom (Tom Hardy) in Venom (2018)
Speaking of Spider-Man villains, Tom Hardy is reprising his role as the friendly, alien symbiote in Venom 2. Not much has been revealed about what we can expect from the sequel, but it is rumored that Tom Holland could make a cameo in the movie as Spider-Man, potentially linking together the rivalry between Venom the famed web-slinger. Either way, we can’t wait to see the bond between man and alien parasite for another action-packed, Marvel movie experience.
10. Villain - Carnage
Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) in Venom (2018)
Many of you may recall the end scene of Venom (2018) where a red-headed Woody Harrelson made his villainous debut as serial killer Cletus Kassidy. When Eddie Brock (Hardy) visits the jail where Kasady is imprisoned, we get a not-so-subtle nod to his true identity as Venom’s nemesis, Carnage. If the movie plans to stick to Marvel lore, then Carnage may be one of the most brutal, unpredictable, and powerful villains we’ve seen yet.
Bloodshot, starring Vin Diesel, opens at Regal on March 13th.
