  • In the movie, the mother of Matt Damon's character, Paul, mentions "they can fly to Mars but they can't cure my fibromyalgia". In 2015, Matt Damon starred in "The Martian" a film about one of the first space expeditions to the planet Mars.
  • Niecy Nash and Kerri Kenney previously appeared in Reno 911! (2003). In this film, they do not share a scene.

  • When Matt Damon's character, Paul, pulls up to his new downsized home, his driver makes the comment, "welcome to the good life". Paul makes a noticeable face in response to this. "The Good Life" is the motto of the state of Nebraska, the home he has just left behind.
  • In one scene Ngoc Lan scolds Paul for saying bad language. In Matt Damon's previous film "The Martian", his character was also scolded by a person for swearing.

  • The trailer for the film creates the false impression that Paul is distraught with his call center job at Land's End, and that this is one of the reasons for his decision to downsize. But in the final film, he actually doesn't take this job until after downsizing, following the divorce. Likewise, a scene of Audrey selling shoes from the trailer that leads to her being similarly distraught does not appear in the final film at all.
  • A trailer scene depicts a vodka bottle on its side with a spigot. Although the final film shows delivery of similar bottles of vodka, it does not show a bottle with a spigot or anyone consuming from the large bottles.

  • When Paul gets out of the ride share car when he gets to leisure land, the driver says "welcome to the good life." "The Good Life" is the slogan for the state of Nebraska, where Paul lived.
  • In Norway they actually have the Global Seed Vault where seeds for almost every plant is saved deep down in the rock in the distant archipelago Svalbard close to the North pole. It's like the vault in the movie but just for seeds. It may have been an inspiration for the movie to locate it in Norway.
