Nathan (Asa Butterfield) has managed to develop a rapport with only one person, his father. But after his sudden death in a car accident, Nathan is unable to connect emotionally with anyone, most of all his attentive and patient mother Julie (Sally Hawkins). Numbers (especially prime ones), are the only things that make sense to him, and when his teacher Mr. Humphreys (Rafe Spall) takes an interest in his mathematical talents, the pair forge an unusual friendship. Mr. Humphreys’ unorthodox teaching methods help land Nathan a spot on Great Britain’s team at the International Mathematics Olympiad and Nathan travels to Taipei for training camp under the supervision of team leader Richard (Eddie Marsan). Dropped into unfamiliar surroundings, and confronted with unexpected challenges, Nathan’s logic is thwarted by the irrational nature of love.
